Browning a5 barrel serial numbers

Browning informed me the gun left the factory in SNs — were invoiced between 1st Jan. New choke codes replaced the choke words stamped on the barrels. No serial number distinction between the Sweet 16 and the Standard 16 gauge A5s. These are among the rarest of the A5 Sweet Sixteen but are priced as standard 16 gauge A5s in value guides. It is also the last year of the non-engraved sweet sixteen. Getting one of these extremely rare original factory issued guns at a standard gun price is a trophy in itself.

He acknowledged the lightweight A5 16 gauge guns produced between and are in fact Sweet Sixteen and identified as such in the factory issued catalogues. Some have shown up with the entire year stamped instead of the two digit year code. The serial number coding system changed to the serial number preceding the date code. Very nice. Perhaps add it as a post to the timeline thread, like Martin did with the proofmark info. Your effort is appreciated. Just bought a Browning A-5 16 ga today, serial number XX.

It also has a choke 'thingy' and a new pressure plug? It was set up for his grandson, who outgrew the gun and went into Rem 12 ga. I owned two Sweet 16's when I was in my late 20's - early 30's, but I don't remember anything about the pressure plug adjustments.

I have one of the 'X' 16's, Xxx. It is definitely a stealth. Thanks for taking the time to pull this information together. Some of the earliest ones imported in had the barrel address 'Browning Brothers Company Ogden Utah'. I have one and know of 2 others. It would be interesting what the and models had. So, if I have a 16 gauge and the serial number starts with X, that is a , correct?

I am sorry to ask a silly question. I am not familiar with this gun or any antique shotguns. My husband inherited it from his grandfather and we are trying to find out more about it not to sell it, for personal knowledge.

Checking my notes I found that Japanese imports began in but Belgian production didn't end until Wingman likes this. Thanks so much for clearing this up! Wingman , May 18, The ring on my barrel has a serial number matching my receiver, but I also have a number on the barrel that I cant explain using any resources I know of.

I can date the gun and barrel with the serial, so the suggestion that the first two digits are a year doesnt hold up in my case. Here is my gun with markings The markings which have me stumped are the ones on the face of the receiver, the number on the barrel as mentioned above, a '1' on the barrel and an 'infinity' or 'lazy 8' on the barrel and finally 'T' on the barrel and barrel extension - Im making the assumption that this is a torque setting in Nm. If you're referring to my earlier post, I said those numbers are unexplained, and the first two numbers could not be the year.

I believe the lazy 8 is the Greek letter Lambda, code for Not necessarily the same year your serial number corresponds to as barrels were often made in advance. Interesting theory about the torque value, but nm is over ft lbs, which seems excessive to me.

But I really have no idea, so I'll keep an open mind. Rudolph31 , Oct 9, Sorry Rudolph, my bad. I should have reread before posting. You are bang on the year for my gun.. I checked the year codes and couldnt find the lazy 8 anywhere.

Another interesting thing to note is that it seems to be scribed rather than stamped. Take me to Browning North America. Auto-5 Semi-Automatic Shotgun. Beginning with Serial Number 1 to approximately , Exact production figures are not available.

Serial number is on the side of receiver.
